Originally, Lucas intended the film to open and close with a storybook, The Journal of the Whills, to emphasise that the story came from a book - the same framing device used in Disney’s 1967 adaptation of The Jungle Book. “George always described it to me as a kids’ picture,” Spielberg said, “a little Disney film, that he didn’t think anyone would want to see, but he wanted to see it.” Indeed, Steven Spielberg said this was exactly the way his friend had described his fledgling film to him. “Walt Disney not only had vision, but he was also an extremely adventurous person. “I think Disney would have accepted this movie if Walt Disney were still alive,” Lucas said in 1973. In archival interview transcripts in JW Rinzler’s The Making of Star Wars, Lucas – still looking for a home for Star Wars – discussed the ideal studio for the film. In truth, it started in the early 1970s, before a single frame of footage had been shot. It’s Walt Disney’s 115th birthday! To celebrate the occasion, let’s take a look at how Lucasfilm became part of the Magic Kingdom.Ĭontrary to what some disgruntled fans might have you believe, the ‘Disney-fication’ of Star Wars didn’t start when George Lucas sold Lucasfilm in 2012. Likewise, the beauty of friendships and family are a powerful theme in Station Eleven. In stark contrast to the overall darkness of a collapsed world, the truth and beauty in Shakespeare and classical symphonies shine forth and touch the hearts of everyone who hears the Traveling Symphony’s performances. The post-pandemic world depicted in Station Eleven is bleak, ruthless, and uncivilized. What made this book memorable was the fundamental truth that even in extreme circumstances, beauty and truth shine through. Because “Survival is insufficient.” The real magic of this book is in its presentation of the truth that art and beauty and culture are worth preserving even in the darkest of times. The Traveling Symphony travels around the Midwestern United States performing classical music and Shakespeare plays. After a flu pandemic destroys 99% of the world’s population, most of the remnant live in small survival-focused communities. An immediate national bestseller, Station Eleven is a contemporary dystopia by Emily St. Wars & Conflicts - World War II - General. He offers an unrivaled firsthand account of World War II in the Pacific: of what it looked like, sounded like, smelled like, and most of all, what it felt like to one who underwent all but the ultimate of its experiences. William Manchesters book, Good-bye Darkness, found me at an important moment in my life, a time when I was just beginning to explore the dreams of those writing from battlefields in the Civil War. In this intensely powerful memoir, America's preeminent biographer-historian, who has written so brilliantly about World War II in his acclaimed lives of General Douglas MacArthur (American Caesar) and Winston Churchill (The Last Lion), looks back at his own early life. To find out, Manchester visited those places in the Pacific where as a young Marine he fought the Japanese. In his dreams he lived with the recurring image of himself as a battle-weary youth angrily demanding to know what had happened to the three decades since he had laid down his arms. The nightmares began for William Manchester twenty-three years after World War II. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie Preferences, as described in the Cookie Notice. And I’d heard of an awesome twist that happens in The Thief, so I was curious about that as well. I was intrigued enough that I wanted to see how things ended. Honestly, his narration was pretty much the only reason I even finished it. I must have at least a little romance in my books or I start to go a little nuts! However, I quickly changed my mind when I found out that Steve West narrates these books because I’m basically in love with him. I’ve been hearing great things about Megan Whalen Turner’s Queen’s Thief series for years, but wasn’t ever really interested in The Thief because there’s no romance in it. Their journey toward the treasure is both dangerous and difficult, lightened only imperceptibly by the tales they tell of the old gods and goddesses. What Gen is interested in is anyone's guess. The magus is interested only in the thief's abilities. To attain it for his king, he needs a skillful thief, and he selects Gen from the king's prison. The king's scholar, the magus, believes he knows the site of an ancient treasure. Published by Greenwillow Books on December 27, 2005 |
